A Special Kind of Treatment in Orlando FL

Two-phase orthodontic treatment is designed to guide jaw development and ensure proper alignment of permanent teeth. The main advantage of two-phase treatment is achieving optimal, long-lasting, and stable results by addressing jaw development early and refining tooth alignment later. Learn more about how Two Phase Orthodontic treatment in Orlando FL can help your child's teeth.

First Phase

The goal of first phase treatment is to develop the jaw size in order to accommodate all permanent teeth and to establish a healthy relationship between the upper and lower jaws.

Children sometimes exhibit early signs of jaw problems as they grow and develop. An upper or lower jaw that is growing too much or not enough can often be recognized at an early age. If children over the age of 6 are found to have this type of jaw discrepancy, they may be candidates for early orthodontic treatment.

Because children are growing rapidly, they can benefit significantly from early-phase orthodontic treatment that uses appliances to guide jaw growth. This creates a strong foundation and adequate space for all permanent teeth to erupt. Early correction may also help prevent the need for permanent tooth extractions or surgical procedures to align the jaws later in life.

If left untreated until all permanent teeth erupt, a jaw discrepancy may become too severe to achieve an ideal result with braces alone.

Orthodontic records will be needed to determine:

  • The type of appliance to be used
  • Treatment duration
  • Frequency of visits

These records include models of the teeth, x-rays, and photographs.

Resting Period

During this phase, the remaining permanent teeth are allowed to erupt naturally. Retaining devices are typically not recommended, as they can interfere with the eruption process. Allowing teeth some freedom of movement during this time supports more natural alignment.

A successful first phase will have created enough room for permanent teeth to follow an ideal eruption path. Without this space, teeth may become impacted or severely misaligned.

It’s important to note that:

  • At the end of the first phase, teeth are not yet in their final positions.
  • Selective removal of certain baby teeth may be recommended to improve eruption.
  • Periodic observation appointments are typically scheduled every 3 to 6 months.
  • Not all children will require a resting phase.

Second Phase

Each tooth has a specific place in the mouth where it functions in harmony with the lips, cheeks, tongue, and other teeth. Once this balance is achieved, the teeth can function properly, remain healthy, and look aesthetically pleasing. This is the goal of the second (final) phase of treatment.

At the start of the first phase, diagnostic records were taken and a treatment plan established. The appliances used in Phase I were tailored to the child's specific needs. Phase II begins once all permanent teeth have erupted and usually includes braces on all teeth for approximately 18 to 24 months. Retainers are worn after treatment to maintain results.
