Healthy Smile in the New Year

New Year, New You - With a Healthier Smile

2021 has officially started and that means kicking your old, bad habits to the side and starting new, beneficial habits! This is especially important for your dental and orthodontic health. 2020 was not an easy year for anyone and we understand if your oral hygiene routine slipped a little. But as the new year starts, it's important to get back to good, healthy habits to improve the health and quality of your teeth! Start with our healthy habits listed below!

Oral Hygiene Habits to Embrace in 2021

Having a positive and beneficial oral hygiene routine doesn’t take a lot of work, just a few simple habits. Our teen and adults orthodontics office in Winter Park recommends the following:

1. Schedule Your First Dental Appointment of 2021: Start the year off right by scheduling a teeth cleaning with your local dentist for January or February. We know that the holidays are normally a time to over-indulge in sweets, that’s why the new year is a great time to ensure you are cavity free, especially if you have braces!

 2. Eat Healthy: Eating a healthy diet high in fruits and vegetables is not only good for your overall health, it is excellent for your oral health as well. Our orthodontist recommends swapping out processed and sugary foods for a whole-foods diet. This will decrease your risk of cavities and other harmful dental and orthodontic conditions.

 3. Drink Plenty of Water: Drinking plenty of water should be part of your daily balanced diet. Water helps flush out bacteria and plaque from your teeth, gums, and braces. It also helps keep your mouth and body hydrated which will decrease your risk of dry mouth and cavities. Try drinking water instead of soda, juice, and other sugary beverages this year.

 4. Floss Every Day: In 2021, commit to flossing every day, especially between your braces and wires. This will improve your oral health tremendously. It's a simple habit that will really make a difference. Dr. Dann Orthodontics recommends brushing at least twice per day and flossing once per day.

 5. Cut Tobacco: This is the year to finally quit smoking. Did you know that smoking doubles your risk of gum disease and other oral health conditions? Once you quit smoking your oral and bodily health will improve immensely.
